United Methodist Beliefs

The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Jesus' words in Matthew provide the Church with our mission: "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you" (28:19-20), and "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. . . . You must love your neighbor as you love yourself" (22:37, 39).

Questions & Answers

Here are some answers to common questions.

We practice open communion.  This means everyone is welcome at the Lord's Table.  Communion is a means of grace in which every person can experience God's presence and love.  There is no minimum age.

On the day of Pentecost, Peter offers the promise of baptism without regard to age, saying it is for those present, their children, and those far away (Acts 2:38-41). Later in Acts, we read of Paul and Silas baptizing Lydia and her household, and later their jailer with his entire family (Acts 16).

We continue this practice by baptizing the children of those who reaffirm their baptismal vows, receiving them into God's mighty acts of salvation.

We believe in the one true, holy and living God, Eternal Spirit, who is Creator, Sovereign and Preserver of all things visible and invisible. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love, and rules with gracious regard for the well-being and salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.

We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from and is one in being with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit convinces the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. The Holy Spirit leads people through faithful response to the gospel into the fellowship of the Church. The Holy Spirit comforts, sustains and empowers the faithful and guides them into all truth.

We believe the Holy Bible, Old and New Testaments, reveals the Word of God so far as it is necessary for our salvation. It is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice.

Yes.  Children of all ages are welcome to participate in the service.

The members of our church feed the community through hot lunches served Monday -Saturday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. through the Feeding Body and Soul Community Kitchen, a hot dinner on Sundays from 5:30-6p.m., handing out groceries, clothing, and household goods on Wednesdays throught the Shepherd's Pantry.

We also provide an opportunity most months for those with special needs and their caregivers to come together to socialize, do crafts, play games, eat, hear the Word of God, and just have a great time together.  We call this group Something Special.  Anyone in the community with special needs is invited to attend.

The members of the church donate food each month to help support the Shepherd's Panty.  They also take up collections throughout the year to help their neighbors such as providing undergarments to the House of the Carpenter in Wheeling or donating toys for the local youth who are in need at Christmas to name a few.

Volunteers are always needed and appreciated to hand out goods at the Shepherd's Pantry and to fix and serve meals in the Community Kitchen during the week and at Sunday Dinner Church.

We also welcome monetary donations to support the missions of our church as well as to the church itself to help keep the doors open for our community.
